Intimate with a Roman wall painting

March 16, 2010

A fragment of a wallpainting, from one of the houses of Roman Canterbury. Roman red with a white greek key motif.

Yes, come and look closer.

There are his brush strokes, there is where he started painting the motif, there is where he stopped to fill the brush with more paint. There are the straight lines carved in the plaster, helping him to position the white key border.

Glass and time is in between us, but one couldn’t get more intimate with the work of this Roman craftsman.
